Confidentiality
Do’s And Don’ts by Susan Keane Baker
Do position computer screens away from
the view of the public
Do ask transcription services to leave
patient identifying information out of
the body of transcribed text.
Don’t share passwords for patient
information system access.
Don’t post appointment schedules
inside exam rooms, or in other areas where
patients and visitors can view them.
Don’t discuss patient information
in areas where you may be overheard.
Do break into a conversation among other
staff members, if you realize that a visitor
is listening to it. Ask, "Have you
heard from Dr. Pitcher? I’m waiting
for her call." (Code for "Little
pitchers have big ears.)
Do remember that if a patient hears
you saying anything about her, she may
worry that you will also disclose something
that she considers more sensitive. If
her trust in you is diminished, she may
begin to give you inaccurate or incomplete
information, making your job tougher.
