6 Quick Tips on Telephone Skills by Susan Keane Baker
Forget saying “after the beep”
as part of your outgoing voice mail message.
People know that now.
Manage expectations: “What
number can Dr. Perry reach you at this
evening?”
Don’t say: “I don’t
know when your test results will be
ready.” Instead say, “As
soon as your test results arrive, I’ll
call you. I should know more by Monday
afternoon, and I’ll call to give
you a progress report then.”
When leaving a message, pause between
each digit of your telephone number.
Come on, doesn’t it drive you
crazy when you listen to a long, drawn-out,
rambling message that ends with “socallme203-972-8410?”
Aren’t you annoyed with having
to listen to the entire message again
just to get the phone number?
If you leave long, drawn-out, rambling
messages, get in the habit of leaving
your phone number at the beginning and
end of the message. Your reputation
will thank you.
Return telephone calls promptly.
You’re going to do it anyway,
get it over with. Then people will be
more inclined to call you back promptly
when you need something.
